PIFROM

Post by OldGnashburg » Thu Feb 13, 2014 4:07 pm

I recently found a normpnt.rom, the normslp.rom and a pifdata.bin online at the edgeemu site, it was in the MAME.144 area, and it had Aleck64 PIF BIOS (I just googled pifdata.bin download) and I am not sure if it is the right one and I don't know how I can tell. Any suggestions?

The correct file has a CRC32 checksum of 5EC82BE9.

What about the normpnt.rom and the normslp.rom? Any confirmation there?

The PIFROM is the correct one.

Those are also probably the correct ROMs if they're bundled with MAME. CEN64, however, uses precomputed tables so those ROMs aren't necessary.

What, when did this happen? Why not use the legitimate files?

Performance optimization. Saves a few cycles by post-processing point data into something ready for the RDP plugin.

Since angrylion's external fork of MAME changes to a zilmar-spec plugin.

At that point it was no longer adhering to the MAME structure, so it was not relying on the point/slope files externally anymore.
