Performance results after testing CEN64

Post by OldGnashburg » Tue Jan 20, 2015 6:22 pm

Hey all, I just downloaded each windows build for CEN64 and tried them out. So I decided to post my performance and comment.

My specs are:

ASUS K53SD DS-71

CPU:
Quad Core Intel Sandy Bridge i7-2670QM

GPU:
NVIDIA GeForce 610M

RAM:
6GB of DDR3 RAM

Anyways I tested out Ocarina of Time, just selected my PIFROM (that I may or may not have legally dumped/decapped) and my Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (U) (v.1.1) [!] and dragged and dropped onto each version of CEN64

Results:

1st Place - AVX:
I found this the fastest, at stable 50 VI/s (not PAL but just hung around 50 VI/s) during the N64 Logo, and dropped to a 35 VI/s and the held at a variation between 25 VI/s and 28 VI/s.

2nd Place - SSE2:
Surprisingly I found this almost as fast as AVX, putting it at 2nd place, performance wise. It was around 45 to 48 VI/s at the N64 logo and then dropped to 23 VI/s but would go up to 27 VI/s.

3rd Place - SSSE3:
A bit slower, I obtained a 40 to 43 VI/s and then it dropped to around 20 to 22.5 VI/s

4th Place - SSE4.1:
I was surprised this was slowest, but this build gave me a 38 to 41.5 VI/s and then dropped to a 15 to 18 VI/s.

Ocarina of Time boots and runs fine. It looks beautiful but not graphically which I believe is because of the low resolution and a lack of scanlines.

May I suggest we have a seperate thread or area of the website where we post our performance and compare?

Not sure if this is helpful or not but it sure made me happy.

I might test some more this week, since I own every commercial N64 dump in the GoodN64 v3.21 set. I'll some mainstream and also hick (whatever I haven't heard of) games.

The Windows builds aren't properly optimised, meaning they'll give inconsistent results compared to the Linux builds.

Get a Haswell i5 at least if you plan to run this fullspeed.

- GPU is not relevant at all, since the simulation is done enterely by the CPU. (well, is not relevant unless you have a very old one)

- The same applies to the RAM.
Testing CEN64 on: Intel Core i5 520M 2.4 GHz. SSE2 SSE3 SSE4.1 SSE4.2 SSSE3, but no AVX. Ubuntu Linux

I wish I could figure out what is causing this. :(
